PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project involved the creation of two 10x10 rectangular wooden canvases, each intricately decorated with laser-printed images of the White Magnolia (白玉兰), a symbol with deep historical and cultural significance. The White Magnolia, celebrated for its purity and elegance, is also the city flower of Shanghai. This choice of imagery not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also pays homage to the city's rich heritage and contemporary identity.
The project embodies the fusion of tradition and modernity. By choosing the White Magnolia, we aim to reflect Shanghai's dual nature as a city steeped in history yet constantly evolving. The interactive element represents the dynamic interplay between past and present, inviting viewers to experience the city's cultural and technological advancements.
The canvases are crafted from high-quality wood, chosen for its durability and natural beauty, providing a warm and organic contrast to the technological components. The White Magnolia images are laser-printed onto the wood, a technique that ensures precision and longevity, capturing the delicate details of the flower. This combination of natural and technological materials reflects the theme of blending the old with the new.
The interactive component of the installation is achieved using servos, Arduino, and p5.js. These technologies work together to detect and respond to human presence, causing the wooden pieces to rotate. The servos, controlled by the Arduino, are programmed to move in response to data captured by sensors. p5.js, a JavaScript library for creative coding, facilitates the interaction, enabling the canvases to track and respond to the movements of the viewers. This setup not only creates a visually engaging experience but also emphasizes the integration of art and technology.
The installation aims to create a unique, immersive experience that encourages viewers to reflect on the relationship between tradition and innovation. By incorporating elements that symbolize Shanghai's cultural heritage and its forward-looking spirit, the project offers a contemplative exploration of how modern technology can reinterpret and celebrate traditional symbols.
